Spiritual Advisors

Most Rev. Felipe de Jesus Estevez, S.T.D., Auxiliary Bishop, Archdiocese of Miami

Bishop Estévez was born February 5, 1946 in Havana, Cuba and arrived in the United States on a Pedro Pan flight as a teenager. He was ordained in 1970 and has done extensive studies in Spiritual Theology, earning a doctorate from Gregorian University in Rome. He is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Italian.

From 2001 to 2003, Bishop Estévez served as spiritual director of Saint Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, where he had served as rector from 1980 to 1986. He was pastor of Saint Agatha Parish in Miami for 14 years, while also directing the Campus Ministry at Florida International University.

Appointed Auxiliary Bishop on November 21, 2003, and ordained January 7, 2004, he oversees the archdiocese’s Ministry of Pastoral Services including family life, youth, campus, prison and Respect Life ministries, as well as all the apostolic movements.

Rev. Monsignor Pablo A. Navarro. Pastor, St. John Neumann Church

Monsignor Navarro is presently Pastor of St. John Neumann Catholic Church as well as Chairman of the Priests Personnel Board of the Archdiocese of Miami. He is also a member of the Archdiocesan Incardination Board, the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council, and the Archdiocesan Financial Council along with the Doctrinal Review Board.

In 1995, he was named Prelate of Honor by His Holiness Pope John Paul II, thus receiving the title of Monsignor. Prior to be Pastor of St. John Neumann, Monsignor Navarro was Pastor of St. Timothy Parish and Supervising Principal of Archbishop Carroll High School. In addition, he was Rector and President of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary from 1993-2000.

From 1986-1993, he served as Executive Assistant to Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy. In 1984, he was sent to Boston by the Archdiocese of Miami to obtain a Master’s Degree in Scriptural Theology and his License in Spiritual Theology.

A native of Havana, Cuba, Monsignor Navarro was ordained a priest in 1978 after receiving his Master’s Degree in Divinity from St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in both History and Philosophy from Niagara University in New York, as well as a Master’s Degree in History from the University of Toronto in Canada.

Rev. Father David G. Russell ,Former Pastor St. Maurice, St. Louis, and St. John Neumann Churches

Father David G. Russell was born in Brainard, Minnesota on September 30th, 1937. He received his B.A. from St. John University, Collegeville, Minnesota in 1960, and his license in Theology from St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, Maryland before ordination at St. Anthony Church, Fort Lauderdale, in 1964. After ordination, he was sent to Catholic University for a Master Degree in Religious Education and served as an assistant pastor in several parishes.

He was secretary to Archbishop Coleman Carroll, served as spiritual director of the Archdiocesan Lawyer’s Guild, Archbishop’s representative to “The Voice”, Catholic newspaper, member of the Archdiocesan Worship Commission, member of the Florida Board of Governors of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, executive secretary of the Archdiocesan Human Relations Commision and Director of Radio and Television for the Archdiocese.

Father Russell founded the parish of St. Maurice in Fort Lauderdale and was pastor of St. Louis Parish in Miami for eight years. He attended the Institute for Spirituality and Worship in Berkeley, California in 1982 and was professor of homiletics at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary for two years. He was appointed Pastor of St. John Neumann Parish by Archbishop McCarthy on May 15, 1985 where he served until 2002. He has been a member of the Archdiocesan Commission on Art and Architecture and is a member of the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council. He does parish missions and now assists at St. Patrick Church on Miami Beach.
